Photographer Jean Daniel Cadinot put French gay porn on the map, pure and simple, even though the genre had been spottily represented in that country throughout the '70s, courtesy of nowadays barely remembered filmmakers such as Algerian-born Norbert Terry (HOMMES ENTRE EUX), the late Jacques Scandelari a/k/a "Marvin Merkins" (NEW YORK CITY INFERNO) and the mysterious Emmanuel Dos Santos (HOMOSATISFACTION). Part of the problem may have been that there were precious few theaters showing this type of film outside of Paris and it would take the emergence of a new medium – i.e. video – to effectively bring it to its intended audience. Cadinot had already built a reputation on superlative still work when he tentatively switched to moving images with a series of half hour shorts starting with 1980's TENDRES ADOLESCENTS, gradually expanding to one hour with the immensely popular SACRE COLLEGE ! and ultimately feature length in 1984 with the brooding LES MINETS SAUVAGES. Through stringent pricing strategy – even in the DVD age, he's one of the few whose films never drop to catalog prices – he has always given the impression of quality product that's worth its weight in gold and, even though not every title's a classic, he's mostly right about that.
